This folding knife is by far Otter's most popular knife. The history of this model dates back to 1867 when Heinrich Kaufmann & Sons' India Works developed and produced the Mercator knife and registered it as D.R.G.M. (Deutsches Reich Gebrauchs Muster). Only the India Works was allowed to use the Mercator brand name. Otter has owned the trademarks since 1995. During the World War, the knife was known far beyond Germany's borders, when it was issued to soldiers of the German army under Emperor Wilhelm II. The end of the Second World War brought a turnaround, with the knife becoming a cult object abroad. For American soldiers returning home from Germany, the Mercator knife was one of the most popular souvenirs. Even today, the famous cat with the characters K55K - from Kaufmann's address at 55 High Street, Katze (cat) - is applied by hand with real gold paint. The sheet steel box construction of the handle (powder-coated steel) makes the knife stable, flat, light and handy. An ideal everyday companion, suitable for any jacket or trouser pocket.
