The Doan Magnesium Firestarter was invented by the company's founder, Mr. Sol Levenson, in 1973.
As an avid outdoorsman, Sol saw the need for a reliable, durable, and easy-to-use fire starter during a business trip to South America with his friend Rocky Marciano, the legendary heavyweight boxing champion. The Doan Magnesium Firestarter was soon adopted by the US Armed Forces. Sol would always proudly state that our tool was standard issue in the survival kit of F16 fighter pilots. Over the years, an entire mini-industry of magnesium fire starters evolved, with the Doan Firestarter as the benchmark.

By scraping the "shaving edges" with your blade, you will accumulate a pile of magnesium shavings.
Simply scrape the "sparking insert" to ignite the shavings at temperatures of 5400°F, hot enough to light even the most stubborn campfire!

STEP 1

Rest the edge of the tool on the ground. Scrape the narrow side of the tool marked "SHAVING EDGE" with your knife blade held perpendicular to the tool. Accumulate a small pile of magnesium about the size of a quarter next to your tinder. (paper, leaves, twigs, bark, etc.)

STEP 2

Rest the edge of the tool on the ground within 1" of the magnesium shavings at approximately a 45° angle. Quickly scrape the entire length of the side marked "SPARKING INSERT" with your knife held perpendicular to the SPARKING INSERT. This action will generate sparks, which will ignite the magnesium shavings, producing a white flame. If you don't want to dull your knife, a small hacksaw blade works great!

SURVIVAL TIPS

In windy conditions, the magnesium shavings should be placed in a depression in the ground.
They will ignite rubber to create a distress smoke signal.

If fine tinder is not available, use the following:
-Parts of personal clothing (pocket lining, handkerchief, etc.)
-Vehicle upholstery
-Drain oil from vehicle and place in hubcap, soak rags in oil and ignite. (Also creates a smoke signal.)
