Lithium-ion polymer (LiPo) packages are successors to the well-known lithium-ion (LiIon) packages. The fundamental advantage of LiPo is undoubtedly the capacity-to-size ratio. The packages are very small while maintaining high electrical efficiency, which allows choosing an appropriate package for virtually every AEG replica. They do not have a memory effect. They can be recharged very frequently, without the need to be fully discharged. Frequent recharging is beneficial for every type of battery.
It is crucial to remember not to discharge a LiPo pack to a level below 3V per cell and not to overcharge above 4.2V per cell. Another advantage of LiPo packages is a small self-discharge rate. An unused package will lose approximately 3-5% of energy per month. It is important to pay attention to an unused package as there is a risk that, due to non-use for a prolonged period, it may be discharged below the minimum acceptable value (3V per cell) and unintentional chemical reactions may occur, leading to a deterioration of the package's properties, including permanent damage and, in extreme cases, fire. An unused LiPo pack should be charged to an average of 70%.
When used correctly, a LiPo pack has an average usage period of 500-700 cycles. An important factor is the temperature at which LiPo packs can work. Unlike other batteries, LiPo cells perform well at low temperatures. However, they should be charged at room temperature. To maintain good condition of LiPo batteries, they need to be balanced during charging with a service connector, which most LiPo packages have (a good LiPo charger is equipped with a built-in balancer).
